World Health Organization Confronts Significant Workforce Cuts Following United States Funding Withdrawal

This global health agency has announced plans to cut its workforce by nearly a quarter – totaling over two thousand jobs – before mid-2026.

Funding Shortfall Triggers Major Reorganization

This move comes following the United States, formerly the organization's biggest donor, pulled out funding previously this year.

The US government had been responsible for approximately eighteen percent of the agency's total funding, causing a substantial budgetary shortfall.

Expected Workforce Cuts

Based on internal estimates, the staff is expected to drop from 9,401 posts in early 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by mid-2026.

The reduction of 2,371 positions includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and natural departures.

"This year has been among the most difficult in our history, as we have navigated a challenging but necessary process of prioritisation and realignment," commented the organization's leader.

Financial Shortfall Remains

This Geneva-based body now faces a funding gap of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, representing almost a quarter of its required budget.

This amount represents an improvement from a prior estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in spring.

Not Included Finances

The budget calculations do not include an additional 1.1 billion dollars in potential contributions from current negotiations with various donors.

The representative for the organization stated that the current unsecured portion of the biennial budget is actually lower than in earlier periods, crediting this to multiple factors:

  • A smaller overall budget
  • Initiation of a fresh fundraising campaign
  • Higher in participating countries' required contributions

This restructuring initiative is now nearing its end, paving the way for the organization to move forward with a renewed operational model.
