To his neighbors, Jihad al-Shamie appeared to live a largely unremarkable life: a recent parent who exercised with dumbbells and parked his car inconsiderately in front of the residence he shared with his parents.

The son of an emergency surgeon, Shamie seemed to have a positive upbringing, with two younger brothers who eventually built notable jobs in technology and pharmaceutical sciences.

But since he was shot dead after carrying out a lethal assault targeting Jewish worshippers, a fuller picture has come to light. Authorities discovered that Shamie was already a bankrupt, convicted low-level criminal and an alleged rapist when he attacked worshippers observing the holy day.

Early Years Appearing Ordinary

Jihad al-Shamie reportedly enjoyed a conventional upbringing in Manchester throughout that decade. Through family recordings recorded to send to his grandfather in Syria, he cuddles a cat in the rear yard, telling his father he wants to feed it; in different footage he assists his younger brother on a swing on the lawn.

Shamie grew up with siblings following him, the relatives going on trips to entertainment venue, Chester zoo and the retail destination, and the children participated in school nativity plays during the festive season.

Where they once lived, opposite North Manchester general hospital where Shamie’s parent was employed, those living nearby mentioned a “typical young child” who was member of a “respectable home”.

He would engage harmoniously with youngsters on the neighborhood, and the sole peculiar aspect someone remembered was that he passed much of his time using portable gaming devices – enough that it made his eyes blink.

“They were all right, the parent was employed across the street, he seemed quite nice, regularly conversed with me. The household appeared respectable, the mom often talked with neighbors. The boy would play games, he’d play it all day, he had a noticeable blinking habit.”

‘A Typical Individual’

Residents living in his peaceful neighborhood in Prestwich characterized him as a “straightforward, ordinary lad” who would regularly train in his yard area, practicing strength training, with someone noting he regularly parked his car “badly” outside her house.

The family are believed to have moved to the semi-detached house, approximately two miles away from the site of the violence, around a decade and a half prior, when Shamie was nearing twenty years old. As the boys matured, the relatives made their home in the neighboring district.

Son of a Trauma Surgeon

The parent, Faraj al-Shamie, worked globally as a trauma surgeon, practicing in dangerous regions worldwide, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He previously worked for NGOs, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, and studied under renowned surgeon David Nott in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

Relative's Declaration

Faraj al-Shamie has dissociated the household from his son’s attack, sharing a statement on Facebook that stated: “Information coming from the Manchester area about the assault directed against a Hebrew temple has been a profound shock to us.

“The household members both domestically and internationally explicitly rejects this horrific action, which affected unarmed, ordinary people. We entirely dissociate our family from this assault and express our deep shock and sorrow concerning the incident. Our hearts and thoughts are with those affected and their relatives, and we pray for their strength and comfort.”

Private Situation

Shamie had formerly been employed as an instructor, teaching English and computer programming. Yet, records showed him jobless in government insolvency records which indicated he applied for debt management during September of the prior year while living at the family home. Only thirty days following, his parent shared a photograph of him with a recently born child, captioning the picture “Excellent Addition to the Family”.

Previous Legal Issues

Investigators reported that Shamie was on police bail for rape when he steered his modest automobile into congregation members at the synagogue. The exact date is uncertain the supposed assault occurred but it is thought to have happened within the current year. He was subject to ongoing scrutiny by regional authorities.

He had faced legal issues previously, according to sources, who noted his history of offenses for other less-serious offences. He was nevertheless not monitored by counter-terror police or security services prior to the attack.

Radicalisation

In the hours since the attack, authorities have been examining all aspects of his background to understand who, or what, delivered him on the journey toward violence. This involves reviewing communication data, verifying contacts and acquaintances, and examining his internet history.

He reportedly became preoccupied on the challenges affecting Muslim populations in areas within the Arab world, particularly in recent years in Gaza. An online presence, believed to belong to Shamie has a machinegun as its profile picture, paired with botanical elements, and possibly religious scripture.

A solitary message on the inactive social media profile references the bombing of Manbij in Syria in 2016, and requests heavenly intervention to “oppose people who injured and slain them.”
