Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Passing on undesired gifts could be viewed as slightly impolite – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. This unusual assortment reportedly features gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They will be auctioned off in a public auction by a Italian art dealer. The specific date has not been finalized, but the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the proceeds going to various charities.
Storage Room Holdings
The items are currently stored in a repository on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away for years.
The full gift list remains disclosed, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The query focused on if a legal value limit was being honored. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.
An International Array of Presents
The collection includes:
- A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
- Artworks from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.
Political Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her own political sphere, with building relationships with international counterparts and making Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.
This unique auction symbolizes a unconventional way to deal with the state presents that accumulate during a political career.
