Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
