Recreational competitors are getting the chance to claim a seven-figure prize when they compete against elite players - featuring world number one the Spanish champion - in a winner-takes-all point leading up to January's Australian Open

Tournament officials of the Melbourne major have revealed the $1 Million Single-Point Tournament, which will match 10 amateur players against top-ranked players in a knockout tournament at Melbourne Park

The Unique Competition Operates

Competitors are set to play 'the decision-making game' to decide who serves or receives, and whoever wins the point will advance to the following stage

The winner of the event will earn a significant cash prize

Contextually, players who made it to the semi-finals of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won over a million Australian dollars

Past Comparable Tournaments

The American Grand Slam staged a redesigned, standalone combined gender tournament in the eighth month which encouraged top singles players to participate, with the champions receiving $1m

The year's first major held its first-ever single-point competition this year, but the total purse was A$60,000 and it received minimal attention

Andrey Rublev was the sole elite competitor competing, and his campaign concluded when he put the single service opportunity permitted failing to clear the net in his last eight match

Competition Details

Organizers have not said exactly how the event will work, but it is projected to follow a similar format to this year's edition

The elite players will be granted to have a single serve and the amateurs twice - as is the standard practice in standard play

While it is not certain how the pairings will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the location will be the main stadium rather than the secondary venue

The final stages will take place in a nighttime schedule instead of midday timing

Competitor Requirements

Any Australians - or foreign participants who have registered with the governing body - can participate in 'One Point Slam' events at their community centers

The victors of the community events will then go into a draw, with an everyday competitor from every state and territory picked to compete in the 'championship round' in a evening match on the specified date

There will also be a preliminary competition in late year which non-professionals, aspiring competitors, well-known figures and athletic celebrities can participate in

It starts on early January and the two winners will qualify for the midweek 'final showdown' with the additional everyday players and 10 professionals

"No matter your experience, the overall victor will receive the reward. Entries will start imminently at facilities nationwide"

Tournament officials stated there were "further celebrities to be announced soon", while the tournament site indicated "celebrities" would be taking part
